Enfield Town is the borough’s leading shopping, commercial and administrative centre. Located between two train lines; Enfield Town Station which travels to Liverpool Street and Enfield Chase Station, which travels between London Moorgate to Hertford North and Letchworth Garden City. Formed around the ‘Market Place’ which still runs a market, three days a week and is run by ‘The Old Enfield Charitable Trust’. The trust is forward-thinking in regard to the development and continued function of the market, as it is one of the few markets in London with general and cold storage, electricity, free Wi-Fi, CCTV security and cleaning facilities.
The high street consists of a variety of trade with long-standing proprietors; Pearsons, McDonald’s, Toni & Guy, The Post Office, Barclays Bank, Santander, Lloyds Bank, HSBC, Oxfam, a few independent cafes, estate agents; Haart, Lanes and Ellis and Co. and the main borough Library. It connects with privately-owned shopping precincts, at two points, known as ‘Palace Gardens’ and ‘Palace Exchange’ which have two multi-storey car parks totalling 646 spaces while the Council-run car parks have 229. Both precincts offer free Wi-Fi to shoppers and reduced parking rates.
Apart from the market area, the high street has no stopping/resting points along its entirety and contains 7 trees in total. There is a historic water fountain that has been moved several times since its existence but does not function. There is a newly developed public green space adjoining the main borough library with the only working water feature. The most negative aspects of the High Street are the 15 vacant units, 5 of which are located just metres away from the core component, the market, and the one-way, two-lane road of traffic which cuts the access to each side of the street due to its constant use throughout the day and the 10 different bus routes that use it.
